FAQs

Commonly Asked Questions

  • How much meat do I get with a whole/half hog?
A half hog typically yields approximately 80 pounds of meat, while a whole hog provides around 160 pounds. This is a great option for families or individuals looking to stock up on high-quality, locally sourced pork. If you're ready to reserve your whole or half hog, contact us today to secure your order!
  • How much freezer space do I need for a whole/half hog?
For optimal storage, you'll need about 3 cubic feet of freezer space for a half hog and around 6 cubic feet for a whole hog. This allows enough room for the various cuts, such as chops, roasts, and sausages. If you have questions about freezer space or need assistance with your order, don’t hesitate to reach out.
  • What is the hanging weight?
The hanging weight refers to the weight of the hog after it has been gutted and skinned, prior to further processing. This gives you an accurate representation of the meat you’ll receive. Feel free to contact us for more details on the processing weight and how it translates to your final meat cuts
  • Can I customize what cuts I want?
Yes, absolutely! When you purchase a whole or half hog, you have the full flexibility to customize the cuts based on your preferences. Whether you're looking for specific cuts like tenderloin, ribs, or bacon, our processing team will work with you to ensure it’s tailored to your needs. To get started with your customized order, give us a call or place your request online today.
  • What cuts are available with a whole/half hog?
With a whole or half hog, you can select from a wide range of cuts including roasts, ribs, chops, bacon, sausage, and more. The choice is yours, and we will work closely with you to ensure you get the cuts that best fit your culinary needs. To begin customizing your order, reach out to us or order online.
  • When I buy a half hog, do I get the front half or the back half?
The hog is cut lengthwise down the backbone, meaning you will receive a mix of both the front and back halves. If you have specific preferences for either the front or back half, let us know, and we’ll do our best to accommodate. Ready to reserve your half hog? Contact us today!
  • Are your pigs butchered on site, or do they have to travel?
Our pigs are humanely raised on local farms and then transported to Edgewood Locker, a trusted and experienced local butcher in the area. This ensures high-quality processing while supporting the local economy. For any questions about the butchering process, don’t hesitate to contact us.
  • Do I pick up and pay for my meat at the butcher?
Once your meat is processed, you will pay Edgewood Locker directly. You can then choose to pick up your order from the butcher or have it delivered if you’re local to Cedar Rapids. We offer free delivery within Cedar Rapids, with a small fee for delivery outside of the area. Contact us today to schedule delivery or pick up your order.
  • How long will it take our family to eat a whole/half hog?
The time it takes to consume a whole or half hog depends on your family’s consumption habits. A half hog is perfect for medium to large families, and a whole hog is ideal for larger gatherings or long-term storage. Not sure which option to choose?
